What 2,000 beta budgets taught us

Most people overspend in the first week after payday and underspend in the last. The daily number flattens that.

Two thousand people used Groat between March and September. With their permission we looked at the shape of their months, not the amounts.

The first week

Spending in the seven days after payday ran 38 per cent above the daily average. The last seven days ran 31 per cent below it.

What changed

Three things moved once people had kept a daily number for two months.

  • The first-week bulge fell to 12 per cent

  • Overdraft days fell by more than half

  • The median person opened the app once a day, for four seconds

None of this is a study. It is what we saw, and it is why the number resets every morning.

One number a day. That is the whole idea.
